Welcome to this week’s issue of the Giant Mandarin newsletter. This week’s newsletter is about cooking and food.

In this week’s Elementary–Intermediate Words we focus on words for common foods in Chinese cuisine. In Advanced Words, we focus on words about the act of cooking itself.

Finally, in Supplementary Reading we suggest an article on meeting China’s most influential female chef, a piece on Chinese dumplings and two Chinese cooking channels on YouTube. (There are many more great channels!) We hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter!

Elementary–Intermediate Words

  1. 米饭 mǐfàn - rice 🍚
  2. 饺子 jiǎozi - dumplings 🥟
  3. 面条 miàntiáo - noodles 🍜
  4. 馒头 mántou - a type of white, soft, unfilled bun, usually steamed
  5. 包子 bāozi - a type of filled bun, usually steamed
  6. 汤 tāng - soup
  7. 蔬菜 shūcài - vegetables 🥬
  8. 肉 ròu - meat 🍖
  9. 鱼 yú - fish 🐟
  10. 油 yóu - oil

Advanced Words

  1. 做饭 zuòfàn - to cook 👨‍🍳
  2. 厨房 chúfáng - kitchen
  3. 炒 chǎo - to stir fry
  4. 煎 jiān - to pan fry 🍳
  5. 蒸 zhēng - to steam
  6. 煮 zhǔ - to boil
  7. 烤 kǎo - to roast (a duck); to bake (a cake); to toast (a slice of bread)
  8. 切 qiē - to cut
  9. 搅拌 jiǎobàn - to stir
  10. 包 bāo - to wrap (dumplings or a present)
